- W2869498 abstract "In response to the argument composition and literature ought to be taught together, so closely students can't tell where one leaves off and the other begins, a teacher replied, 4 They are. The same teacher teaches them. I do both. He missed the point. We are all capable of teaching one thing one day and another the next with no visible connection except the familiar sound of one voice. In fact, we are likely to be divided in ourselves and in our teaching for historical reasons (Murphy 1982). But we need to help students engage in these activities simultaneously, to integrate our teaching and their learning. In the hope of persuading the teacher in question, and anyone else who is interested, I would like first to give some reasons for interweaving composition and literature seamlessly and then to outline one procedure for doing so. In the process I will develop some metaphors. Ann Berthoff claims that metaphors are ways of seeing the implications of theory. They bring to mind, in the sense of reminding , but also in the sense of encouraging us to develop relationships and how they might be articulated (Berthoff 1981). Metaphors are offered here in the same spirit." @default.
