- W287016422 abstract "Teachers and librarians need to be prepared to face censorship. It does, after all, strike in the most unlikely places for the most unlikely reasons-the first reaction of too many educators under attack is, We never thought it could happen here. And there are lots of ways to prepare: developing a clear statement about why literature is taught or stocked, preparing rationales for books taught to entire classes, working on good public relations with citizens likely to support the right to read, and keeping abreast of books and articles about censorship. The brief bibliography below hardly represents anything more than a personal choice of what I think are the best or the most provocative, but even these few works may help some readers not all that well acquainted with the field. I've tried to provide some breadth, but I'll admit the list is doubtless an exercise in superficialism, and anyone who keeps up-to-date can add many more titles. Included in the bibliography are materials from people we wouldn't consider allies, and I'd urge educators to read those works, especially James C. Hefley's Textbooks on Trial, Onalee McGraw's Secular Humanism and the Schools, and Cal Thomas' Book Burning. I begin with a few sources that are absolutely basic to any English teacher or librarian." @default.
