- W287297510 abstract "Without doubt, men possess greater cultural power than women. In leisure activities in general, and in sport in particular, men spend more time and have access to a wider range of opportunities than women, and sport is a unique feature of cultural life in which women are seriously disadvantaged and where sexism is fostered. But, although the social construction of most sports is based on a long and relentless history of male domination and female subordination, nevertheless, male power in sport has never been absolute. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, there was a gradual development of female sport, which continued through the interwar and post-war periods and has accelerated in recent years. The situation now is that more women choose to participate in sport in their leisure hours than previously and more women are involved in a greater number of sports than ever before. This change in the sporting profiles of women is shifting traditional male structures of leisure and sport." @default.
