- W2873600 abstract "It has been more than ten years since a Wal-Mart opened near famous Ninth Street Italian Market in Philadelphia. What bit of Philadelphia's that remains like that of other cities may no longer be a cohesive ethnic neighborhood, but now a manufactured A as tourist site does not represent resistance to globalization, but contrarily acquiesces to it and typifies it in that such sites are exemplars of what Guy Debord has called the society of spectacle. In his book of same title Debord has written: the spectacle corresponds to historical moment at which commodity completes its colonization of social life. It is not just that relationship to commodities is now plain to see commodities are now all that is to see [...] (29). The South Philadelphia we see today is world of Wal-Mart, plus cheese steak sandwich. The poetry of two Philadelphia poets, Frank S. Spiziri, an early twentieth-century cobbler, and J. T. Barbarese, a present day professor, demonstrates that both immigrant's and grandchild of immigrants' poetry can resist assimilation and homogenization. If viewed from Debordian perspective, such resistance is not possible in present because, as Debord has said, there is no place left where people can discuss realities which concern them (Comments 19) and, it would follow, is no place left for ItalianAmericans in this particular locale, Philadelphia, because its Little Italy has been transformed by media and merchandising into a wouldbe all powerful If in early twentieth-century Black Hand threatened to pull community apart from within, now it is possible to blame a new mythological monster: big box. Yet, community continues, though in different ways. In fact, poet of today must leave commodified Little Italy in order to sustain an Italian American poetic just as poet of yesteryear had to leave impoverished Italy in order to sustain life." @default.
