- W287980972 abstract "The objective of this work was to evaluate the methane yield, chemical composition and morphological characteristics of anaerobic sludge (including bacterial morphology and diversity), during two operational changes in anaerobic digesters. The operational changes consisted in a decrease in the hydraulic retention time and a change in substrate composition. Hydraulic retention time changed from 90 to 30 days. Substrate changed from a highly-biodegradable substrate (commercial broiler feed) to a slowly-biodegradable substrate (pig slurry). This experiment was conducted using 2 identical continuously stirred tanks of 6 L, working on average at 50°C during 220 days. The organic loading rate in each digester was equal to 1 g VS L d during the experiment. Methane yield in digesters was stabilized 90 days after pig slurry addition, reaching around 150 L CH4 kg VS . Volatile fatty acid content in the digesters increased with pig slurry addition, reaching maximal values 60 days after pig slurry addition and decreasing thereafter until around 1 g L. Sixty days after pig slurry addition, ammonia content was stabilized at around 2 g N-NH3 L . The addition of pig slurry into an anaerobic digester alters sludge composition and increased the biodiversity of the sludge, being bacilli shaped bacteria, Methanosarcina-like cells, long rod shaped microorganism and large coccus the predominant morphotypes at the end of the experimental period." @default.
