- W28816751 abstract "The present situation of many secondary school students having difficulty inlearning mathematics needs to be thoroughly investigated. Various factors needto be studied in order to determine why these students failed to performsatisfactorily in mathematics. For this research, a group of three hundredsecondary school students were studied in order to determine the influence ofstudents' internal characteristics on achievements in mathematics. This researchfocused on the following seven internal characteristics: Attitudes towardsmathematics, mathematics anxiety, motivation to study mathematics, personalityand behavioural characteristics, cognitive readiness, learning strategies, andlearning styles. For learning styles, Kolb's Learning Style Inventory (1985) was used. Cognitivereadiness test consisted of questions involving abstract reasoning, logicalthinking, and numerical computation. For the other variables. the tests consistedof questionnaires using likert scale from one to five. Mathematics achievementswere determined by the scores that the students got for mathematics in the TrialSPM Examination, 1999.The research findings showed that mathematics achievements were significantlyand positively correlated with attitudes towards mathematics. motivation to studymathematics, and personality and behavioural characteristics. Mathematicsanxiety, on the other hand, had negative influence on achievements inmathematics. The result suggested that efforts must be made to reduce the levelof mathematics anxiety in order to raise the students' performance inmathematics.Mathematics achievements were found to correl ate strongly with abstractreasoning, logical thinking, and numerical computational abilities. As forlearning strategies, higher achievers were found to be more oriented towardsmeaningful learning, as opposed to rote memorising. The findings for learningstyles indicated that higher achievers were more oriented towards abstractconceptualisation and active experimentation modes of learning. Convergencewas found to be the dominant learning style of students who were excellent inmathematics. In the inter-groups comparison analyses, the findings showed that weak studentsdid not have positive attitudes and strong motivation to succeed in learningmathematics. Their levels of mathematics anxiety were relatively high, and theirpersonality and behavioural characteristics1 were relatively unfavourable. Weakstudents also had a relatively lower level of ability in abstract reasoning, logicalthinking, and numerical computation. Weak students were more oriented towardsrote memorising and concrete experiencing mode of learning." @default.
