- W2883202231 abstract "Background: Rotavirus is the leading cause of severe diarrhea in children under 5 years of age, leading to high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Rotavirus infections occur throughout the year in both temperate climates and tropical and subtropical climates, however, in temperate climates, a higher prevalence of rotavirus has been observed during the colder months of the year. Vaccination against rotavirus is a priority in order to reduce the high rate of morbidity and mortality caused by this disease The aim was to determine the prevalence of fecal virus in children under 5 years of age served in the Bacteriology Service. Study the annual, age and gender distribution. Evaluate the presence of leukocytes. Methods & Materials: The presence of virus in fecal matter of 1258 children with acute diarrhea from 0 to 5 years was determined between January 2012 and October 2017. Immunochromatographic techniques were used. The following groups were considered for age distribution: less than 1 year, 1 year, 2 years and 3 to 5 years. The annual prevalence and distribution according to gender were evaluated. The leukocytes were classified as abundant, regular and scarce, using methylene blue coloration. Results: Of the 1258 patients studied, 20.6% (259) presented fecal virus .82.6% (214) presented Rotavirus, 8.9% (23) presented Adenovirus and 8.5% (22) presented Norovirus. The highest incidence occurred between May and August. Of the positive cases, 70% (181) were under one year old. In 83% (215) of the samples, little leukocytes were observed. With regard to gender, 55% (143) were boys and 45% (116) girls. Conclusion: 20.6% of the patients studied had viral diarrhea, especially in children under one year of age, with few leukocytes and a clear predominance in winter. Since the inclusion of the vaccine as mandatory in the calendar since 2015, there has been a marked decrease in the prevalence of Rotavirus." @default.
