- W2883994530 abstract "Baumgarten identifies the principle of contradiction with the concept of nothing, defining both as “both A and not A.” Thus, rather than deriving the concept from experience, as Kant criticized him of having done, Baumgarten sees the principle as necessary for the possibility of experience: something can only be understood as not nothing, as either A or not A. Kant contests Baumgarten’s identification of nothing and contradiction, and instead develops a quadripartite categorical concept of nothing in the Critique of Pure Reason. The first three of Kant’s nothings are variously privative, and the fourth corresponds to Baumgarten. Kant thus claims that Baumgarten should have unified something and nothing in the object in general, but since the object in general is only possible if the categories apply to it, this chapter questions whether or not Kant himself was successful in unifying nothing and something in a higher concept." @default.
