- W2884791741 abstract "Since its introduction into clinical practice in 1980, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) has come to be utilized in virtually all patients who require enteral nutrition. The popularity of PEG has thrust gastroenterologists into the controversies surrounding tube feeding and the so-called right-to-die legislation. This article reviews selected landmark court decisions and concomitant ethical issues that form the basis for current public health policy and debate. Next, recent studies addressing complication and survival data associated with the various enteral feeding modalities are reviewed. Finally, the ethical issues of artificial nutrition and hydration are re-examined in the context of these recent studies, and suggestions are made regarding appropriate use of enteral feeding technologies." @default.
