• W2885105909 abstract "Background Patient experiences are a vital component and an essential focus when designing healthcare services. However, limited resources restrict access to valuable patient experience insights. Healthcare design toolkits, including the NHS Experience-Based Co-design (EBCD) toolkit and the Waitemata Health Service Co-design toolkit, emphasise the value of patient experience primary data. The NHS suggests overcoming the ‘most resource-intensive stages’, of collecting and editing patient experience films, by using stock films. However, stock films do not exist for many health experiences, including the current case study of Australians living with diabetes and preventing diabetic retinopathy (DR). This study will utilise the wealth of healthcare experience literature and develop it into a card deck discussion tool. The aim is to provide easy access to patient health insights, overcome resource limitations, springboard the design project and ensure research investment is maximised. Method The multidisciplinary team is designing for people living with diabetes to prevent DR, the leading cause of Australian Adults blindness. Qualitative research exploring these experiences was gathered through a review of the literature and a snowballing method was applied. The findings were affinity diagrammed and analysed to identify insights into the experience of living with diabetes in Australia. These insights were developed into the Health Insight Card Deck, Living with Diabetes edition. The cards will be used in a workshop with the research team, as a boundary object, facilitating discussion and enabling collaboration. The physical card deck aims to make the insights more accessible and tangible, aiding discussion. While the card format allows the insights to be combined in both purposeful and random ways, facilitating generation of innovative improvement ideas. Results The Health Insight Card Deck, Living with Diabetes edition was developed from the diabetes experience literature. Each card contains an individual insight from the review, a quote from the participants connecting it to the real life experience and a visual representation. It also has a link back to the literature. The multidisciplinary team used the Health Insight Card Deck, in a workshop to decide the future direction of the DR innovation. The cards prompted discussion and enabled shared meaning to be built. Each team member was able to develop a better understanding of the experience of living with diabetes and consider how DR prevention can be incorporated into this experience. The insights guided the research focus, enabling a plan for future research to be developed made based on evidence. Conclusions A methodology has been developed to transform patient experiences literature into Health Insight Card decks. It was used by a multidisciplinary team to facilitate discussion about the current and possible future experiences of living with diabetes and innovative services to prevent DR. Real-world implications: The Healthcare Insight cards used with a multidisciplinary approach will innovate experiences to prevent DR. This methodology has the potential to springboard future healthcare design projects to overcome resource limitations and improve health experiences." @default.
