- W2885328469 abstract "A novel passive antenna system, capable of discriminatingspecific electromagnetic signals is addressed. Thisantenna system will be able to detect signals of certainbandwidths, amplitudes and propagation directions. Thephilosophy behind this design was to maximise the signaldiscrimination at a stage prior to reception. Thedevelopment of such systems could relieve the workinvolved in post detection discrimination, which may betime consuming and expensive. A major motivation of thesestudies lies in the difficulties inherent in signaldetection for mobile radio communication systemsoperating at microwave frequencies. Such an antennasystem consists of two components. They are the filtersection and the detector array. The filter is designed insuch a way that only the near normal signal to thelocally flat area will be admitted and the restreflected. The detector array will be at an appropriateposition below the filter. Two types of filter structures have been studied for thisangular filtering property. They are the DielectricMultilayers (DML) and periodic arrays of slots asFrequency Selective Surfaces (FSS).DML are constructed by stacking layers of dielectricmaterial whose permittivities vary in a near sinusoidalmanner. Such a structure is known to have the ability toadmit certain frequency bands of signals. Theconventional transmission/reflection matrix method isused for its analysis. Also an optimisation procedure iscarried out to minimise the loss of the signal in theDML. The characteristics of the DML as a beam-director andBeam-shaper have also been investigated.FSS exhibit the characteristics of band pass and bandstop filters, depending upon the nature of the surface(periodic arrays of elements or slots) . Here the bandpass nature is utilised by using arrays of slottedelements. These surfaces are tuned to admit narrow bandsignals. The well-known modal analysis method has beenemployed to study the FSS characteristics. The FSS havebeen studied in the context of frequency scanning, beamshaping, beam directing as well as angular scanning.A prototype has been constructed to simulate a multisignal environment in which the above structures havebeen experimentally assessed." @default.
