- W2885442810 abstract "The aim of prostate cancer screening is to detect early asymptomatic, localized cases that warrant radical intervention, in order to reduce morbidity and mortality from the disease. The available evidence suggests that prostate-specific antigen–based screening of the male population of an appropriate age could reduce mortality. However, at the present time screening is not recommended at a national level as the risks of ‘overdetection’ and possible ‘overtreatment’ of ‘low-risk’ cases of prostate cancer remain too high. It is possible that in the near future refinements to the screening protocol, such as targeted screening of high-risk individuals and incorporation of new adjuncts such as kallikrein markers and pre-biopsy multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging, may improve the ratio of risks to benefits from screening, such that its uptake may become acceptable from a public health perspective." @default.
