ABSTRACT: A good management of water resources is of major interest in the Mediterranean countries. Satellite imagery is one of the most advanced techniques for a better management of water resources. From space imagery, drainage maps have been established for several areas of Syria. Obtained maps allow following the heterogeneity of hydrographical networks in different geologic, geomorphologic, and climatic zones (humid, semi-humid, arid and semi-arid). Therefore, knowing the surface water itineraries, permit to optimize the network of small dams and hillside ponds, which are the most efficient structures to intercept water in the Mediterranean regions. Landsat TM (1995) images have been used, after correction by the ERDAS software using all bands. Results for three Syrian areas, representative of the whole country are presented: the humid or semi- humid Northern coast, the semi-arid Sahel Akkar and the arid Al- Qualamoun area. A zonation map of network hydrographic heterogeneity is proposed, and implications for the management of the water resources for this Mediterranean country are discussed." @default.
