- W288566125 abstract "The behavioral science professions have produced a scarcity of research exploring the depth and frequency that spiritual issues are discussed during the supervision of counselors and practitioners in training. This article summarizes a study focused on measuring and comparing the amount of spiritual dialogue occurring throughout the supervision experience as perceived by supervisors and supervisees using the Spiritual Issues in Supervision Scale ([SISS], Miller, Korinek, & Ivey, 2004). Supervisor and supervisee religious affiliations were also examined to determine the effect of this variable on reported incidences of spiritual discourse in supervision. Results of this study substantiate the use of the SISS as a reliable measure, particularly when used with highly religious samples of supervisors and supervisees. The data also suggest that when the effects of religious affiliation are controlled, significant differences between supervisor and supervisee group SISS scores exist.Numerous cultures around the world rely heavily upon spiritual and religious practices and beliefs to shape their communities. Many of these cultures are currently represented within the United States. A majority of the American public regard religion to be very or moderately important in their lives (Newport, 2012, December 4; Newport, 2012, December 24). Combining a number of research studies, Hill and Killian (2003) report that 94% of Americans believe in God, 90% pray, and 75% believe their religious involvement is positive and enriching. With religious affiliation positively correlated with well-being and negatively correlated with mental health issues like depression and anxiety (Newport, Agrawal, & Witters, 2010, December 1; Newport, Witters, & Agrawal, 2012, February 16), it is no wonder that many people who seek mental health services, especially those holding to a religious worldview, prefer their spiritual and religious beliefs be integrated into their mental health treatment (Aten & Hernandez, 2004; Rose, Westefeld, & Ansely, 2001; Worthington & Sandage, 2001). In addition, many clients view religion and spirituality as essential coping mechanisms that hold importance in human health and growth processes and expect mental health professionals to utilize spiritual or religious interventions during the course of clinical treatment (Post & Wade, 2009).A significant percentage of practitioners within the behavioral science field also view spirituality and religion as important facets of their personal and professional lives (Post & Wade, 2009; Schulte, Skinner, & Claibom, 2002; Young, Wiggins-Frame, & Cash well, 2007). The American Counseling Association (ACA) and the American Psychological Association (APA) currently house specific divisions for members dedicated to religious and spiritual values within their respective professions and both associations have recently authorized or published guidelines and competencies related to spirituality for application across diverse clinical practices (Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling [ASERVIC], 2009; Hathaway & Ripley, 2009). Standards for accrediting graduate training programs recommend the integration of religion and spirituality as multicultural constructs within both counselor education and clinical psychology curricula (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs [CACREP], 2009; APA, 2002; APA, 2009). Regardless of one's personal religious/spiritual beliefs or having access to professional resources addressing spiritual and religious issues in counseling, many in the field report feeling undertrained or ill prepared to tackle these subjects with their clients (Hage, Hopson, Siegel, Payton, & DeFanti, 2006; Young, Cashwell, WigginsFrame, & Belaire, 2002; Young et al., 2007).Education and supervision may play an important role in developing multicultural counseling competencies, including those related to dealing with spiritual issues across diverse settings. …" @default.
