Virus nanoparticles are nanostructures formed by the self-assembly of multiple copies of virus capsid proteins. These virus-based nanotemplates constitute a particular class of protein cages bearing the characteristics of ideal nanocarriers for medical imaging and drug delivery: their monodispersity (uniform size), polyvalency, and biodegradability make them ideal delivery platforms. These bio-nanoscaffolds are also amenable to site-selective functionalizations by genetic or chemical modification. Moreover, they can be expressed in host cells and conveniently purified, making their production in cell factories potentially simple, inexpensive and environment-friendly. Virus nanoparticles have been used as carriers for bioactive molecules including DNA, proteins, and drugs.
