- W2885984858 abstract "Despite increasing knowledge about the integration of nanoenabled technologies in society over the last two decades, questions related to their environmental safety and occupational health (ESOH) risks remain. Their purported unique properties and behaviors in environmental systems and lack of consensus methods to generate robust data often lead to risk management indecision. Such “paralysis by analysis” offers a glimpse into an enormous challenge that lies ahead—assessing and managing the risks of emerging technologies at the accelerating pace of 21st century innovation. This challenge extends far beyond consideration of the ESOH risks of first-generation nanostructures and encompasses convergence of nanoscale systems with new chemicals, synthetic biology, autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, and decentralized advanced and additive manufacturing (e.g., 3D printing). As nanoscale systems continue to evolve and converge with other technology domains, those systems will become increasingly sophisticated both in terms of the functions they are capable of performing and the risks they pose to humans and the environment. The risks posed by these convergent systems will not simply be “nano” risks. Instead, they may also include risks associated with other technology domains such as enhanced mobility, biological infectivity, or the ability to avoid and navigate physical obstacles or barriers. In the absence of more efficient risk assessment and management strategies, the threats posed by these converging technology domains may become insurmountable. Furthermore, the risks posed by some of these technologies may extend beyond the natural environment and include threats to global safety and security. Much consideration has been given to the effects of first-generation nanoobjects on environmental and biological systems, but comparatively less attention has been given to consideration of the realistic scenarios by which these materials may be integrated with other technology domains and, in some rare but potentially catastrophic situations, used for nefarious purposes." @default.
