The CNPq is mainly devoted to researcher funding, whereas the CAPES evaluates postgraduate courses and funds undergraduate and graduate fellowships. CNPq also provides a particular form of funding called scientific productivity fellowship, which classifies the researchers under 2 main categories: category 1 and 2, by decreasing order of value. Of the 217 fellows in Dentistry in December 2017 (http://www.cnpq.br/web/guest/bolsistas-vigentes), 34 describe Oral Medicine and/or Oral Pathology as their main areas of investigation. For the analysis of scientific production, we considered all publications and counseling services over the researcher's career, defined as the period between the date of publication of the first scientific paper and December 2017. We also analyzed the publications and consultations over the past 5 years, considering the period between 2013 and 2017 (average duration of fellowship). The 34 researcher fellows, with predominance of males (n = 22; 64.7%), were distributed in 7 Brazilian states: São Paulo (n = 14; 41.17%), Minas Gerais (n = 8; 23.52%), Bahia (n = 3; 8.82%), Rio Grande do Norte (n = 3; 8.82%), Goiás (n = 2; 5.88%), Pernambuco (n = 2; 5.88%) and Rio Grande do Sul (n = 2; 5.88%). As for the home institution, researchers were spread over 15 different institutions in the country. However, 3 institutions are responsible for approximately 35.3% of the fellows: Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade de São Paulo (FOUSP-SP) (n = 4; 11.76%), Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba - Universidade Estadual de Campinas (FOP-UNICAMP) (n = 4; 11.76%), and Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (FO-UFMG) (n = 4; 11.76%). The median time since receiving the PhD degree was 20.4 years (interquartile range [IQR] 12–44). Over their academic career, the 34 researchers published 5449 articles in scientific journals, with an average of 160.26 articles per researcher (range 67–323 articles). Of the 5449 articles, 3176 (58.28%) were indexed in the Web of Science (an average of 93.41 articles/researcher), and 3035 (55.67%) articles were indexed in the Scopus (an average of 89.23 articles/researcher). Over their career, the fellows counseled 483 undergraduate students in research (median 14.20; range 3–49), 326 master students (median 9.58; range 5–41), 241 PhD students (median 7.08; range 1–30), and 32 postdoctoral fellows (median 0.94; range 0–11). The median Hirsch Index of the Institute for Scientific Information (H-index ISI) of the fellows is 15.14.
