The historical narratives add value to the food item through claims of proximity to origin that would provide the consumer with a sense of authenticity and naturalness. More importantly, however, these narratives are also one of the channels where history becomes a powerful tool to forge and craft new stories bout the meaning and the value of a place. In this article, as I examine how the claims to proximity to origin play out in the origin stories of olives in Turkey, I pay particular attention to how the ethnically contentious history of Greek past is incorporated into the history of the olives. I argue that the brand's origin stories and visual narratives of the labels sustain insidious ways in which the displacement and cultural appropriation of Greek presence in Western Turkey is still an active and unfinished project. From a broader lens, these narratives demonstrate how “local” is historically constructed is critical to unpack to understand the politics of belonging, authenticity and memory." @default.
