- W2887970461 abstract "Since the late 1980s, the use of computer technology in the design and in the building process of architecture has considerably grown. From initial experiments and theoretical enthusiasm, practiced mainly in universities and industries where traditionally there was already a strong relationship between design, technology and industries, after about thirty years we have achieved some widespread and standardized results in software industry, processing, production, profession, spanning from BIM to parametricism applications. CAD technology, had already be introduced in the postwar era and adopted in architectural practice beginning in the 1970s, affirmed Yehuda E. Kalay – founding member, and past president, of ACADIA (Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture), and former co-Editor-in-Chief of Automation in Construction – already in 2004, “CAD [goes] beyond the improvements in drafting, modeling, and rendering for which it is commonly used. Computer-aided architectural design (CAAD) is capable of modeling and manipulating objects (not merely their graphical representations), reasoning about and predicting performance of design solutions, generating new design solutions through algorithmic and other methods, managing vast amounts of information, and taking advantage of opportunities offered by the Internet for collaboration across time and and for design of the virtual space of the Internet itself.” From the early Nineties at Columbia University of New York, Graduate School of Architecture Planning Preservation directed by Bernard Tschumi, a further phase of postmodern culture started, that of the technological innovation of design, built around the digital design (aid to invention) and computing sciences in architecture (BIM, prototyping, 3D printin g, form-finding, parametricism) competing with similar experiences already started at MIT (Negroponte). In this new field of research giant as Frank Gehry certainly makes digital design the fundamental tool for linguistic exploration and for research on the construction methods of architecture. With the development of digital design, Gehry has played a decisive role for several decades with the foundation of Gehry Technologies. After the initial research engagements of several academics and institutions the results were spread throughout recent teaching courses and programs in cutting-edge schools during the last fifteen years: Digital Research Lab at Architectural Association, Sci-Arch Los Angeles, Angewandte Wien, MIT, Columbia, Cornell. But recently courses focused on topics as Algorithmic Architecture and scripting, Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies emerged also in other architectural schools not traditionally engaged in these researches (Stuttgart, Chalmers, Cardiff, etc). What will be the next conceptual steps and tools and in which sectors it seems that the use of Computational Modeling in architecture will be strengthened? The paper will build up a state of the art and document the most promising and relevant applications and case studies of Computational Methods in architectural design." @default.
