- W2888801513 abstract "A post-mastectomy breast reconstruction is not just a “boob job,” mainly because the thinned tissue from radiation and breast surgeries does not lend itself to hold a large implant. Besides, more and more breast cancer survivors refuse further interventions in their bodies, given how cancer treatments, including chemo-ports, lumpectomies, and mastectomies, have left behind a sort of battlefield on a women’s chests. This chapter argues that “missing the breast” can be an opportunity for the “inscription” of a different gendered signifier and for the breast to assume a different signification—not just for a transformation into a post-femininity in the visual realm but also for a new “phallic femininity” to arise. To make the point, the chapter uses the story of Saint Agatha from Catania who is said to have been martyred in 251 bce for resisting the advances of the Roman governor Quintianus. For her “No” to patriarchy, Agatha had to endure the torture of the removal of her breasts. In the present moment, the tattoos in place of breasts on women’s post-mastectomy chests express exactly that: an inner strength, a breast turned “inward.” This chapter examines the discourse that envisions this mutilation and separation from the rest of the female body as a place of female liberation and power. It suggests that, that the lack of the breast and its separation from the female body can become a new rhetorical figure of femininity and thereby surmount its mutilated “ugliness.”" @default.
