- W2889024407 abstract "Herb–drug interactions (HDIs) may occur between therapeutic agents and certain plants. It can be a daunting challenge to identify all possible interactions. Even though herbal products (HPs) are from natural sources, the bioactive constituents present in them may lead to potential HDIs by induction or inhibition of drug-metabolizing enzymes (DMEs) or transporters. These potential interactions could modify the therapeutic activity of the drug and may lead to serious clinical consequences. It is of immense importance to study the mechanisms of potential HDIs which offer insight into the approaches to be taken to minimize and prevent adverse outcomes in humans. Even though in silico databases and in vitro approaches exist for screening HDIs, in vivo studies offer a more conclusive way to determine the clinical importance of HDIs. In many countries, HPs may not be subjected to quality control inspection by their respective regulatory bodies. For this reason, their coadministration with drugs poses a serious threat to efficacy of targeted therapy. Liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC–MS) is a widely used analytical tool for the screening of HDIs, mainly due to their high selectivity and sensitivity, which is crucial for analyzing complex HPs. In this chapter, we present an extensive systematic review of the novel screening approaches of HDIs, pointing out their respective advantages and disadvantages. Their analytical and regulatory perspectives are also discussed by summarizing the reports available on the HDIs of metabolic diseases." @default.
