- W2889088241 abstract "Cyanobacteria are valuable and prolific sources of natural products with intricate chemical structures and potent biological activities. In this review chapter, we emphasize on the natural UV sunscreen, mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) from cyanobacteria. We further describe several important MAAs aspects, covering basic features, molecular structure, biosynthesis, regulation, biological activities, and potential applications. MAAs also offer great potential for the development of novel UV sunscreens due to their UV-absorbing and antioxidant properties. Furthermore, recent patents related to the MAAs are also reviewed. Thus the chapter will impart comprehensive knowledge on cyanobacterial MAAs and potential applications in cosmeceutical, pharmaceutical, and biomedical fields. The emerging new technologies of high-resolution separation and detection systems possessing very high sensitivity (i.e., electrospray ionization, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization, and surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization) are considered to play a predominant role in the isolation and identification of novel MAAs having structurally complex molecules. Future perspectives include emerging new technologies for further exploration and discovery of novel MAAs derived from marine and high-altitude inhabiting cyanobacteria in particular." @default.
