- W2889623981 abstract "Development of the female oocyte is a unique process involving mitosis, meiosis, cell cycle arrest, and activation and maturation of the cytoplasm of a single cell. These processes must be tightly regulated over a long period of time, decades in human, due to the finite number of oocytes which reside in the mammalian ovary after birth. Fully developed oocytes give rise to a new organism following fertilization and must regulate the development of the early embryo prior to activation of the newly formed genome. This chapter aims to describe the processes required to develop a fully functional oocyte, competent for fertilization, and development of an early embryo. These processes include (1) cytoplasmic maturation, to facilitate early embryo cleavage events; (2) nuclear maturation, to ensure the development of a unique haploid cell which is arrested just prior to completion of meiosis and is prepared for fertilization; and (3) epigenetic regulation of the genome, required for appropriate gene expression throughout development in a heritable manner." @default.
