- W2889727422 abstract "Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) (Fig. 1) in his The Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson Society and Solitude published in 1909 stated, “The human body is the magazine of inventions, the patent office, where are the models from which every hint is taken. All the tools and engines on earth are only extensions of its limbs and senses. One definition of man is “an intelligence served by organs.” Machines can only second, not supply, his unaided senses. The body is a meter. The eye appreciates finer differences than art can expose.” Born in Boston, Massachusetts and attending Harvard College and later, Harvard Divinity School, Emerson stands out as one of the most influential poets and philosophers of modern times and is well-known as the leader of the transcendentalist movement. He influenced many colleagues of his day, for example, Walt Whitman was a mentor and friend to Henry David Thoreau of whom he delivered his eulogy in 1862. Interestingly, he served as a pallbearer when Nathaniel Hawthorne died in 1864. In this issue of Clinical Anatomy, we extrapolate these words from Emerson with new and exciting studies on human form. Papers on the surgical anatomy of the male inferior hypogastric plexus, a micro-CT study of the mandibular molars, a review on the evolution of transgender surgery, and a presentation on imaging of the lumbosacral plexus are all sure to please the reader interested in anatomy important to surgeons and clinicians alike." @default.
