- W2890006448 abstract "The dual challenges of energy consumption and climate change have triggered significant research interest all over the world. The current reliance of human beings on oil and other fossil fuels and the emission of CO2 to the atmosphere are not sustainable activities. The consumption of oil and fossil fuels is at much greater rates than nature can create. CO2 emission will be soon beyond the absorption capability of the ocean and the atmospheric system. To address these problems, it is necessary to find new sources of renewable energy. In this respect, ferroelectric materials could play a significant role in both energy generation and storage. This chapter aims to provide an overview on fundamental aspects of ferroelectric materials, which are relevant to their applications and the related energy harvesting and conversion, including piezoelectric mechanical energy harvesting, pyroelectric thermal energy harvesting, electrocaloric effect, and photovoltaic solar energy conversion. A brief history of ferroelectric materials will be described, followed by a discussion on their structure and properties. A short summary on their energy-related applications will be presented before ending the chapter." @default.
