- W2890317989 abstract "Recently, researchers have begun to use the term self-initiated expatriate (SIE) to account for a special highly skilled type of business migrant. Contrary to traditional expatriates, these individuals are not sent by a sponsoring home corporation but relocate on their own initiative. Still, we know relatively little about how these varying migration patterns affects organizational behavior and interaction with receiving country nationals in foreign organizations. Another emergent area in expatriate research is the emphasis on the use of local language. Language has been found to influence organizational behavior in many ways since language is a central foundation for communication and group creation. Moreover, language has often been connected to power relations in organizations. This makes the study of local language acquisition and usage very relevant in relation to differences between SIEs and organizational expatriates (OEs) since they often hold different levels of power in the local subsidiaries. In this chapter, we use qualitative data from 74 Nordic expatriates and local employees in China. Receiving country’s language issue is particularly relevant for destinations like China, where the general English proficiency among local employees is low and there is an increasing sentiment of linguistic nationalism among local employees. Based on the above, in this chapter, we address questions in relation to expectations of learning the receiving country language from receiving country nationals and different types of expatriates." @default.
