- W2890410605 abstract "Introduction Skeletal muscle atrophy is a known consequence of disease progression in patients with heart failure (HF). The impact of muscle size, quantified non-invasively using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, on mortality in this population is currently unknown. Hypothesis Muscle size quantified by direct cross-sectional area measurement on MRI is related to mortality in subjects with heart failure. Methods We retrospectively studied 567 subjects without HF (n=364), with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF; n=111) or HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF; n=92), who underwent a cardiac MRI study. Skeletal muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) was assessed with manual tracing of major thoracic muscle groups on axial chest MRI images. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to identify a latent factor underlying the shared variability in thoracic muscle CSA. Cox regression was used to assess the relationship between these measurements and all-cause mortality. Results Higher overall thoracic muscle mass assessed with PCA was independently associated with lower mortality (standardized HR=0.52; 95%CI=0.40-0.66; P Conclusions Axial muscle mass, and in particular smaller size of the pectoralis major muscle, is independently associated with higher risk of mortality in patients with and without HF. Further work should clarify the role of muscle wasting as a therapeutic target in patients with HF." @default.
