- W2890625372 abstract "A major increase of Florida's population over the past couple of decades has many local and state governments looking towards the future. Florida's growth can be managed by establishing smart growth management programs which will acknowledge and reconcile tensions between economic developments, preservation of historic areas, and protection of essential environmental qualities – the concept also known as sustainable development. Established in 1827, the City of Monticello is in the center of rural Jefferson County with a population of about 3,000. Being a small working class community, Monticello serves as the county seat and supports the surrounding agricultural district. The history of Monticello is very rich in character. Majestic Civil-War-Era plantations surround the region as do historic homes, historic cemeteries and public buildings. With this rich character and attractive sense of place comes the increasing development pressure in theregion. Community change can be beneficial. new growth can be a positive force for improving the lives of many residents, although unplanned growth may also endanger important natural and historical assets of the community and region. Smart growth techniques will be applied to maintain this need for economic growth, preservation of historic areas, and protection of essential environmental qualities." @default.
