- W2890655561 abstract "In much of the literature on and many of the de®nitions of supervision (e.g.Bernard and Goodyear, 2004; Loganbill et al., 1982), the primary focus ison supervision as a one-to-one endeavour, where an individual practitionerreceives supervision from one other person who is invariably but notexclusively a more senior colleague, either from the same or another profession. In clinical psychology training in the UK for example, where therequirements for supervising trainee clinical psychologists on their clinicalplacements are set out in the British Psychological Society's Standards forDoctoral Programmes in Clinical Psychology (BPS, 2010), trainees mustalways receive an `appropriate amount of individual supervision' (ibid.:5.11.3), even in circumstances where a team or group approach to supervision is also used. Indeed, it was only in 1995 (BPS, 1995a) that therequirements for supervising clinical psychology trainees were modi®ed topermit the use of formats such as team and group supervision, in order tosupplement one-to-one arrangements. This focus on one-to-one supervisionalso features in much of the supervision research, particularly that carriedout in the context of pre-quali®cation training of helping professionals(see, for example, Akhurst and Kelly, 2006). As Altfeld and Bernard (1997)point out, the emphasis on one-to-one supervision is understandable, atleast in the context of psychotherapy practice, given that the majority oftherapists begin their training carrying out individual psychotherapy. Thus, rightly or wrongly, the scene is set, during pre-quali®cation training at least, for one-to-one supervision to be considered the gold standard of supervisory arrangements, with any other arrangement falling short of this." @default.
