- W2890733062 abstract "Reviewed by: Advances in the Analysis of Spanish Exclamatives ed. by Ignacio Bosque Glen Heinrich-Wallace Bosque, Ignacio, ed. Advances in the Analysis of Spanish Exclamatives. Ohio State UP, 2017. Pp. 236. ISBN 978-0-81421-326-1. There may appear to be little similarity between expressions like Qué paisaje más lindo and Si lo hubiera sabido, habría ido. Nevertheless, they are both examples of exclamatives, a complex and traditionally understudied part of the Spanish language that Advances in the Analysis of Spanish Exclamatives addresses formally. The volume forms part of the Theoretical Developments in Hispanic Linguistics Series and is intended for graduate students or professors with a background in linguistic theory. Strongly grounded in generative syntax, the volume examines the syntax-semantic interface in exclamatives, primarily through carefully argued theoretical studies. However, the volume also includes a poorly executed experimental study and repeated [End Page 469] but underdeveloped allusions to the role of prosody. Despite these shortcomings, the work constitutes a strong contribution to our understanding of the syntactic and semantic nature of Spanish exclamatives. Ignacio Bosque's authoritative opening chapter highlights the kind of detailed syntactic analysis that is the main strength of the volume. He provides a detailed taxonomy of exclamatives, identifying multiple subtypes that are elaborated upon in subsequent chapters. Bosque defines exclamatives as speech acts intended to convey the emotional reaction of a speaker to information that is either extreme or unexpected in degree. Plentiful examples show the vast diversity of utterances that fit under this umbrella, including such syntactically diverse expressions as Qué casa (12) and Es curioso lo bien que se porta (23). While the formatting and style are less rigid than the Nueva Gramática, the detailed, step-by-step analysis of attested uses in both modern and older varieties of Spanish is reminiscent of the RAE, and successfully orients the reader to the topic. Aside from this introductory chapter, the volume includes six chapters that focus on exclamatives in different contexts. These form three groups: 1) comparison of exclamatives with related structures; 2) systematic analysis of exclamative deep structure; and 3) experimental work. Due to limitations of space, this review will focus on 1) and 3), which the reviewer believes show, respectively, the greatest strengths and weaknesses of the volume. The first group comprises thoughtful chapters by Cristina Sánchez López and Raquel González Rodríguez, the first of which examines the similarities and differences between Spanish exclamatives and optatives (e.g., main clauses that express a desire without using a verb of desire, such as Quién tuviera dinero). She argues against the interpretation of optatives as containing an elided verb of desire because of indicative/subjunctive alternation in ojalá clauses. In a related chapter, González Rodríguez provides a comparison of exclamatives and adverbs of extreme degree (i.e., extremadamente), based on the different distributions of these structures in negative environments and the different underlying semantics indexed by each. She argues that exclamatives do not necessarily index categorically extreme values but rather a value that is beyond the speaker's expectation. These chapters are both examples of careful comparative analysis of exclamatives with superficially similar structures and together highlight one of the main advances made by the volume: a better definition and a more nuanced understanding of exclamatives that focuses on how the particulars of their complex syntax affect semantic interpretation. The only empirical work in the volume is a psycholinguistic study by Xavier Villalba, which, via two experimental studies, aims to determine if factivity or degree is more fundamental to exclamatives. The hypothesis is that whichever is more entailed will be easier to deny. While the research questions are relevant, and the literature review justifies the line of investigation, the study suffers from severe methodological flaws in its quantitative analysis. Although the studies aim to compare across groups, no hypothesis testing of any kind is included, and the only results provided are percentages and averages of the different groups. As presented, it is impossible for the reader to know how likely it is that the differences in the data are the result of random variation instead of a meaningful difference that is related..." @default.
