- W28907621 abstract "This chapter discusses the model of a slip band. A slip band is conceived to be a blade-like ellipsoidal region, slightly inclined to the crystallographic slip direction. The aspect ratio is about 1:50 and the angles of inclination, randomly positive and negative with respect to the sense of rotation of the tensile axis, are about the same magnitude expressed in radians—that is, about one degree. The bands occupy a volume fraction of the crystal, which is on average independent of strain. Among the bands are obstacles—regions of high dislocation density, both primary and secondary. The slip bands are the spatial and temporal product of a bifurcation process. An analogy that may help to understand the model is delta formation at the mouths of large rivers. Although this analogy is helpful, it is essentially two-dimensional, whereas the slip band structure is three-dimensional. Slip bands must be confined in three-dimensions." @default.
