What kind of African personhood was forged by African and European actors in the dialectics of these encounters? To answer the question, this chapter examines the linkages between race, colonialism, Christianity, and African selfhood. It also offers a brief study of the formation of African subjects of God and empire under the pressures of European “rationalistic” competitive individualism and capitalism. Finally, it describes the philosophical basis of the traditional African notion of personhood, and then uses it to interrogate the effects of Africa's encounter with Christianity and colonialism on African personhood. The object is to understand how precolonial African personhood shaped the postcolonial Christian world after passing through the withering fires of racism under colonialism and after enduring the dogged efforts of missionary Christianity to refashion Africans according to the western European template." @default.
