- W2890781729 abstract "To determine and compare the homocysteine, folate, and vitamin B12 levels in two representative groups of elderly in Lagos, Nigeria, and correlate them with identifiable risk factors as well as to determine their relationship with the neurocognitive functions of the elderly. This was a comparative cross-sectional study that consisted of 173 adults, aged 60 years and above; 56 were institutionalized and 117 were noninstitutionalized. Sociodemographic data, anthropometric measurements and physical examination were collected through questionnaires. Oral health and neurocognitive function examinations were obtained with standardized instruments (Oral Health Assessment Test tool, Community Screening Interview for Dementia and Abridged Neurological Assessment tool). Ten milliliters of blood was collected from each participant, 5 mL into EDTA for FBC and 5 mL into a plain bottle for ELISA to test for homocysteine, folate, and vitamin B12. Data analysis was done using SSPS version 21. The overall prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia and folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies in the study population was 16.2%, 32.4%, and 16.8%, respectively; there was no statistically significant difference between the two arms of the study population. Male participants and those who were 75 years and older demonstrated a significant relative risk of developing folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies (P < .05), while those with poor oral health status and increased bowel movement (≥4 episodes/d) demonstrated borderline relative risk of developing vitamin B12 deficiency (P = .056, P = .071). Folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies and hyperhomocysteinemia (P < .05) had a significant association with neurocognitive decline in the study participants. This study demonstrated that folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies are prevalent among the elderly in Lagos and that the type of dwelling did not exert any remarkable effect. It also demonstrated that hyperhomocysteinemia and folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies negatively impacted neurocognitive function in the elderly in Lagos, Nigeria." @default.
