- W2890799050 abstract "A study to assess the Effectiveness of Neem Paste Application on Head LiceInfestation among Residential Students in two Selected Hostels at Coimbatore. The aim of the study was to examine the efficacy of neem paste application asagainst regular shampoo application in controlling head lice infestation.A quasi–experimental multiple treatment time series with control group designwas adopted for this study. This study was conducted on 15 students with head liceinfestation from one hostel assigned to the experimental group and 15 students withhead lice infestation from another hostel were assigned to the control group. Beforeintervention data on signs and symptoms of head lice infestation was collected fromboth the groups. For the experimental group neem paste was applied on every 7th day followedby hair wash over a period of 30 days, a total of five applications. Control groupcontinued to use regular shampoo. Both the groups were observed for head liceinfestation using the check list and presence of discomfort by self report on every 7thday, a total of six observations. The data were analyzed using descriptive andinferential statistics. The findings of the study showed that after two applications of neem paste on15th day there was a significant reduction in the signs of pediculosis infestation suchas lice in the hair, red bumps in the scalp, excoriation of scalp, scalp redness andpresence of lice and nits behind the ear and back of the neck in the experimentalgroup compared to control group. There was a significant further reduction in the degree of head lice infestationin the experimental group. (t = 15.93, df – 14, p < 0.01) compared to the control groupon the 30th day. The experimental group had only mild level of lice infestation whereas the control group continued to remain with moderate or severe degree of liceinfestation. Presence of nymphs and nits remained the same in both the groups on the30th day.ivThere was significant reduction in the level of discomfort (t = 13.35, df – 28,p < 0.01) in experimental group on 30th day compared to control group. Inexperimental group all showed mild discomfort where as the control group showedmoderate or severe discomfort. The difference in experimental group was seen asearly as on the 15th day.The study concluded that the marked reduction seen in the degree of liceinfestation and discomfort was as a result of neem paste application as no change wasseen on the control group with regular use of shampoo." @default.
