- W2890917424 abstract "The knowledge of a community often goesunrecognized. It is however constantly being created and employedby businesses, educational institutions, communityorganisations and also by each individual member ofthat same community. It is commonly understoodthat each community has specialized knowledgeand when we need to access that knowledge we goto that community. However, there are few sitesof off icial recording of knowledge – museumsand historical societies do this with a particularfocus. Our educational institutions do thisthrough Curriculum Documents. These latterare organized in Australia by State and also bynational organisations. Our schools and theirlocality are measured against these curricula. Theresults of which are then use to name and describecommunities. We sought to f ind the knowledgethat comes from the community. This document isa record of the knowledge that is circulating nowin 2017 in Footscray, Victoria. We decided to usethe term curriculum as ‘curriculum documents’,as used by educational institutions, ref lect a fullbody of knowledge. The authors recognize thatthis is not complete - the task of accessing all theknowledge of every individual and every placein Footscray is larger than our capabilities. Theauthors also recognize that this current knowledge isin a constant state of creation and recreation- it is amoving dynamic part of Footscray and changes withevery move in the area. This document does bringto the surface a vast array of specialized and expertknowledge that comes from Footscray. Its breadthand depth inspires the ongoing work of recordinglocal knowledge. The knowledge that has been recorded here wasnot found or observed by the writers. We usedthree distinct approaches to assembling ‘Towardsa Footscray Curriculum’. Firstly, communityorganisations were approached to participate ininterviews about the knowledge they recognize asimportant knowledge in Footscray. These interviewswere extended to public walk-in interviewslocatedin public spaces such as the library. Thesecond approach was through a public event – theFootscray Pop Up School. This was held in MaddernSquare in 2016. Community groups and individualsshared their knowledge through both performanceand exhibition and passersby were invited to sharetheir knowledge in interviews. Finally, publicdocuments from Footscray have been examined forthe knowledge they represent. The ‘Towards a Footscray Curriculum’ bookletcontains a brief description of each area ofknowledge illustrated by photographs fromFootscray.Towards a Footscray Curriculum will be of interestto those who wish to know Footscray and to localschools and community organisations. This booklet was created by a team of educationalresearchers from the Public Pedagogies Institute." @default.
