• W2891020498 abstract "In Ontario, Palliative Clinical Specialist Radiation Therapists (pCSRTs) have demonstrated a positive impact on quality of palliative radiotherapy (pRT), utilizing their advanced knowledge, skills and judgement, aligning with Cancer Care Ontario (CCO)’s goal of improving our health care system. pCSRTs improve access to care by sharing tasks with Radiation Oncologists (ROs) and reducing treatment delays. Delayed pRT causes distress, unnecessary symptom burden and compromised survival outcomes. Through CCO’s Community of Practice (CoP), six pCSRTs formed to examine their impact on the palliative population. Utilizing metrics and data collected through the CSRT Project Summative Report, literature reviews and pCSRT’s individual data, a document was created identifying the unique areas of impact. Increasing access to care is one of the pCSRT’s greatest impacts. The pCSRTs expedite patient navigation from referral to treatment, allowing greater throughput of patients and earlier treatment times. A pCSRT decreased the number of days from referral to treatment from 8.1 to 3.5. Another pCSRT expedited the process for inpatients requiring pRT, by triaging and assessing patients prior to the RO. Through involvement with a rapid access palliative clinic, a pCSRT reduced the time from decision-to-treat to treatment by 7 days. Increased efficiencies are seen as pCSRTs can also be safely delegated shared acts previously only performed by ROs. Lastly, utilizing telemedicine services minimizes the inconvenience to the patient. A pCSRT demonstrated a time and cost savings of approximately seven hours and one hundred dollars per patient utilizing virtual consultations compared with in person.
