- W2891041952 abstract "Play is an important part of child development. Through play, a child learns about the world around them and processes their individual experiences. Observing a child at play can give insight into problems they have, without the need to speak about complex and emotionally charged concepts. Play therapists use this principle to provide age-appropriate psychodynamic therapy to children with a variety of needs. In a related discipline, play specialists use tools such as dolls or role play as a mechanism to relate information to children. Play specialists can thus explain complex ideas to young children, such as the need for examinations and treatments in a health-care setting. The roles of play therapists and play specialists differ fundamentally, although both disciplines rely on the innate desire of a child to play and the potential for learning through play. Whereas both can be considered child-centred, only play therapy is child-led since it is non-directive—the therapist is present and engaged with the child, but does not direct the play. Conversely, the work of play specialists is directive by design; specialists often work with an explicit goal in mind and with specific information to impart." @default.
