- W2891091206 abstract "Medicinal problems have always been a matter of pursuit in almost all civilizations. This has led to the requirements of developing a drug delivery system which would dispense the pharmacologically active moieties only to the site of action, without distressing the healthy tissues and organs. Since nanoscience and nanoengineering are one of the trending areas of present scientific progress, they are regarded as potential mediums for successful applications in nanomedicine and biomedical fields. Nanotechnology has affirmatively impacted the present healthcare industry. However, the early determinations in the field of nanomedicine were attentive only on taming the properties of preexisting therapeutic and diagnostic modalities. Recent years have witnessed several novel moieties with therapeutic and diagnostic potential, with the emergence of the supramolecular assembly of simple components through nanoengineering. Quantum dots (QDs) are one such example which have been successfully applied to the diagnostic and therapeutic field. QDs which were initially used in determination of surface kinetics are now successfully used as drug delivery agents as well as diagnostic markers. QDs are nanocrystals which are composed of a semiconductor core material which is further fenced inside another semiconductor material having larger spectral band gap. A typical QD generally falls in the range of 2–10 nm in diameter making it functional for one on one interaction with drugs and biomolecules. Apart from their nanosize, other unique features such as broad-range excitation, high fluorescence, size-tunable narrow emission spectra, and high photostability potentiate the application potential of QDs to nanodiagnostics, imaging, targeted drug delivery, and photodynamic therapy. In this chapter, we will be focusing on various aspects of QDs: their pharmacology, toxicological manifestations, recent advances, and applications in biomedical and pharmaceutical industry." @default.
