Photovoltaic (PV) technology, especially dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) that mimic the photosynthesis process as in plants, offer a cheap and easy alternative for solar to electric conversion. This chapter explains the working principles of a DSSC and its main components. On photoexcitation of the dye, an electron is injected into the conduction band of the semiconducting oxide, generating the oxidized form of the dye. The chapter summarizes the fundamental processes involved in DSSCs. The versatility of depositing conducting polymers onto the FTO was found to influence the performance of DSSCs. Methods such as spin coating and electrochemical polymerization have been widely employed to deposit conductive polymers with excellent electrochemical stability as well as moderate conversion efficiency while other methods can also be employed." @default.
