- W2891174504 abstract "Radar probes the atmosphere by directing electromagnetic energy at the region of interest and receiving the relatively weak signal that is scattered back. This signal is processed to extract various signal parameters such as delay, amplitude, and frequency difference between transmitted and received signals; then these basic signal parameters are related to various meteorological phenomena. The two problems involved are: first, to estimate the basic signal parameters from the return signal and second, to relate these signal parameters to meteorological quantities of interest. Estimating the parameters of a noisy signal is a well-developed procedure, having a firm basis in statistical communication theory. For many mathematical models of signals and noise, optimal estimators for various signal parameters have been derived and their performance studied. These concepts are well covered in the radar literature and so they will only be mentioned briefly here. The meteorological variables alluded to above, on the other hand, are not well covered in conventional radar literature because returns from the atmosphere are generally termed “weather clutter” by radar designers and operators interested in hard targets." @default.
