Rida Wahyuningrum, M.PdKeywords: Language Power, Critical Discourse Analysis, Epistemic Modality and Deontic Modality.The study is aimed to describe the representation of power through the language used by lecturer of EFL classroom seen by modality expression. The theory of critical discourse analysis (CDA), which is described by Fairclough (1989) used in this study to analyze the power into three stages of analyzing CDA, which are description, interpretation and explanation. The focuses of the study are: 1) the type of modality expressions representing power used by the lecturer of EFL classroom and 2) the highest frequency of modality expressions representing power by the lecturer of EFL classroom. In this study, the writer uses descriptive qualitative research method to analyze the data, explain the related theory to the language power and collect the data from audio recordings to the written transcription. By referring to the theory, the data are classified into the language features of modality which the language features are described and interpreted through the first and second stages of analyzing CDA and they explained by answering some crucial points proposed by Fairclough (1989). As the result of the study, the writer finds out that the language used by the powerful participants appears in utterances contains type of modality expressions; modal auxiliary, modal adjective, modal adverbial, predicative adjective, lexical verb and multi-word units stand for epistemic and modal auxiliary, predicative adjective and lexical verb stand for deontic modality. Also, it shows that the power seen from the epistemic modality as the highest frequency of modality expression representing power by the powerful participants." @default.
