- W2891217159 abstract "Background: Mental health data is seldom available in low-income countries in Africa, and estimates of the size of the intergenerational transmission of depression in these countries are scarce, particularly using up-to-date nationally representative data. South Africa has high rates of depression compared to other low-and-middle-income countries, especially among adolescents. This paper presents the most recent nationally representative estimates of the size of the intergenerational transmission of depression among low-income adolescents in South Africa. Methods: The Center for Epidemiological Studies Short Depression Scale (CES-D 10) was used to determine the presence of depressive symptoms among individuals, in a nationally representative longitudinal dataset. The size of the intergenerational transmission of depression was estimated, using weighted significance tests conducted with linear probability models, local polynomial regression, and multivariate logistic and fixed effect estimates. Findings: The intergenerational transmission of depression is extremely high in South Africa. Adolescent children of depressed mothers are seven times more likely to suffer from depression compared to those without depressed mothers, and this figure is higher in other sub-samples. Parental mental health is the single largest determinant of adolescent depression, compared to other key child and household characteristics. Paternal transmission of depression is greater than maternal transmission, and daughters are at higher risk compared to sons. Parental and child depression are not related across time periods, only contemporaneously. The direction of causality appears to run from parent to child. Interpretation: To improve adolescent mental health in low-income countries, it is important to treat adolescent-parent dyads as a whole. Intergenerational transmission is not observed to persist over time, indicating that the environmental component of transmission may be more important than the genetic, thus non-medical approaches which improve overall household welfare may also reduce depression transmission. Funding Statement: The authors state: No funding was obtained for this Declaration of Interests: The authors declare no competing interests. Ethics Approval Statement: Per included letter in Supplementary Material (S1), the University of Cape Town, Commerce Faculty Ethics in Research Committee gave Ethics Approval for this study." @default.
