- W2891343963 abstract "Online courses are becoming more and more popular in postsecondary education, including computer science (CS) departments. However, there are conflicting reports in the literature regarding whether online course delivery results in equivalent, better, or worse learning achievement for the students. A previous study of student performance in an Introduction to Operating Systems course that was converted from a face-to-face lecture class to online delivery showed some improvement in performance on tests after the course went online; however, the results were not sufficient to establish statistical significance. The current study considers the same two sets of students, but compares their performance in a subsequent face-to-face course (Computer Architecture) for which the operating systems course was a prerequisite. Analysis of test and final exam scores in the Computer Architecture course reveals that students who took the prerequisite course online performed significantly better than those who took it face-to-face. This result supports further development of online courses, particularly lower-level prerequisite courses, within the computer science curriculum." @default.
