- W2891355186 abstract "Near-infrared(NIR) light therapy has been implicated as an effective ergogenic aid toenhance muscle function and delay the onset of fatigue. The most commonmanifestation of fatigue is an impairment in muscle function and an inabilityto perform work. However, no studies have directly examined the dose-responseproperties of phototherapy and its ability to delay the onset of fatigue andprevent muscular strength loss. More specifically, no studies have previouslyexamined the ability of NIR light therapy to offset the age- associateddeleterious effects of normal aging on muscle function. Therefore, the purpose of experiment 1 was todetermine the most effective dose of NIR light therapy to delay the onset oftask failure. Each subject received 3 different doses of phototherapy treatment(sham, 240 Joules, 480 Joules) over their first dorsal interosseus (FDI) duringthree separate testing sessions. The 240 Joule treatment demonstrated asignificant increase in time to task failure compared with sham. Therefore, the240 Joule treatment delayed the onset of fatigue by allowing subjects tosustain the submaximal isometric task 26% longer than when they received thesham. The purpose of experiment 2 was to evaluate the use of NIR light therapyto enhance muscle function in older adults. Per Experiment 1, we used the 240Joule dose. Near-infrared light therapy enhanced time to task failure only inolder adults. Enhanced time to task failure was explained by increases modulationof the motor neuron pool. More specifically, increases in motor unitsynchronization (power from 13-30 Hz of the EMG). In addition, treatment withNIR light therapy improved absolute strength in older adults. Fine motordexterity, as measured by the Purdue pegboard was also improved when the FDIwas treated with NIR light therapy. Treatment with NIR light therapyineffective in young adults. These results may be a result of inadequate dosingand subthreshold stimulation of the physiological processes that enhance musclefunction. Therefore, results from these studies support the use of NIR lighttherapy as an effective ergogenic for older adults when applied prior tofatiguing exercise. ( en )" @default.
