- W2891520891 abstract "Abstract If a food waste-to-energy system is determined to be technically feasible, its environmental performance relative to conventional waste treatment methods must also be demonstrated. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a systematic method for quantifying environmental impacts. A review of LCA studies of food waste conversion is provided to report key parameters that impact environmental performance. Anaerobic digestion is the most technically mature and commercially viable technology and there are a large number of relevant LCA studies and available system data. Understanding of fermentation and transesterification, as well as less developed technologies such as pyrolysis and bioelectrochemical systems, is limited due to the fewer number of commercial deployments for food waste conversion. The use of waste as a feedstock has the inherent advantage of avoiding upstream impacts of alternative biobased feedstock. The provision of coproducts that effectively displace high impact alternative systems, such as fossil-based electricity grids or mineral fertilizers, or the avoidance of waste disposal treatment impacts, such as those associated with landfill treatment of food waste, increases the environmental benefit of food waste-to-energy systems." @default.
