- W2891537780 abstract "Parents today are busy for a multitude of reasons. Some work, some are single parents, and many find little lin1e lo spend quality time with their children. Such little time spent with children could cause more harm on a child's academics than most parents realize. Vast research has been conducted regarding the affect that parental involvement has on a child's perception towards reading. it has been concluded that parental involvement influences a child's achievement in beginning reading as well as the future success that a child demonstrates throughout his educable years. There will continue to be a string of researchers/ educators who will push to educate parents about the affect parents have on their child's developmental reading process. Research has also concluded that parents who exemplify involvement in their child's reading at an early age, rear children who are not only more aware of the use of books, but also aid in helping their children become lovers of reading. To determine if their [sic.] is indeed a relationship between parental involvement and a child's achievement in beginning reading as well as his future success in it, both parental and student surveys were administered to a selected group from John F. Kennedy School in Windsor, Connecticut. The research presented in these surveys is concerned with the influence of parental involvement on the reading interests of student in grades kindergarten through sixth. The prime focus is on the home life that a child is reared in as far as reading, and only reading, is concerned. The survey asks specific questions regarding a parent's involvement in literature and other forms of print, with their child. Five separate surveys were prepared and administered to both students and parents. They were as follows: Reading survey for students in grades kindergarten through first; Reading survey for students in grades two and three; Reading survey for students in grades four through six; Reading survey for parents of students in grades kindergarten through third; Reading survey for parents of students in grades four through six. The surveys were developed and tailored to meet the academic needs of students on each grade live and included such questions as Do you think reading is important? and Do you read while you are at home? The parental survey asked questions regarding parents' involvement in their children's reading as well as their own involvement in reading. Once the surveys were collected, a point system was established to score each survey. The surveys were then tabulated and data was inputted into a data base. The surveys themselves were given a number system so as to compare the direct scores between parents and children of the same family. The survey scores were then compared to all other survey scores. It was determined from the surveys that there is a direct relation between how involved parents are with their children's reading and a child's desire to read. Parents who responded in a positive way toward the survey, had a children who also responded…" @default.
