The purpose of the research was to investigate howchildren with reading difficulties were supported in learning to read in first class. Itwas conducted on seven children, who were identified as having difficulties inlearning to read, in four primary schools. The children were observed in their learningsupport and mainstream classroom settings over a period of 12 weeks. An observationschedule was designed and coded to ensure that the observation of teaching andlearning to read was standardised across learning support and classroom settings. Thedata from the schedule were triangulated with interviews of teachers, principals,parents/guardians and children, and with the policy and planning documents of theschools and teachers.The research methodology was designed to capture the process of teachingand learning to read, using a case study approach. A thematic approach was used toanalyse the research findings, which highlighted how learning support can be mademore effective for struggling readers. Reading support was dominated by a separationbetween learning support and classroom instruction. The reading skills that thechildren learned in learning support were not transferring to classroom reading. Thiswas an organisational rather than a structural issue. The main findings called forcollaborative planning between teachers, updating of policies, the use of assessmentas the driving force of reading instruction, and a more balanced approach to theteaching of reading. The importance of schools upskilling parents/guardians tosupport their children to read at home was recognised. The importance of childrenbeing successful in learning to read in junior classes as an essential skill for laterlearning and development underlies the study" @default.
