- W2891948665 abstract "This chapter focuses on the experiences of the political prisoners of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania on Robben Island maximum security prison – the Alcatraz of the apartheid state – in southern Africa. It examines the cultural history of songs and the cultural resistance of this group in the southern African liberation struggle with a special focus on the 1960s. The prison at Robben Island was at the heart of the southern African struggle for liberation; and, whilst a great deal has been written about the heroic struggles on Robben Island, little, if anything, has been said about the cultural struggles and achievements of the Robben Islanders. The inhuman conditions of imprisonment on Robben Island failed to destroy the will of artists who wanted to voice their achievements and failures, hopes and frustrations, and the inevitability of their release and ultimate liberation through culture and music. Culture played an important role in the liberation struggle but, sadly, little attention has been paid by social scientists to the arena of culture in writing the histories of African liberation struggles." @default.
