- W2892022038 abstract "The Portuguese coast is located in a biogeographic transition zone, between temperate and subtropical waters where the northern or southern distribution limits of many species overlap. Portuguese coastline is characterized by specific hydrographical features with a cooler northern region affected by both upwelling and rainfall leading to higher volume of river run-off, and a much warmer southern region with a strong Mediterranean influence. This, in addition to the differential distribution of sediment types along the coast (coarser sediments in the North and finer sediments toward the South) makes the northwestern marine biological communities differ considerably from the central and southern. The Portuguese coast presents a great diversity of marine and coastal habitats despite having been subject to various impacts from the following: (1) pollution, from historical contamination for which sources are now under control to the occurrence of emergent compounds, such as pharmaceuticals plastic marine debris (PMD); (2) climate change, such as the occurrence of extreme weather events that have caused changes in the composition and functioning of biological communities such as invertebrates and fish, with decreased diversity and production; (3) coastal erosion, that seriously affects a great part of the Portuguese coast, requiring large financial investments into hard and soft protection with some positive results; and (4) habitat loss, mostly caused by physical disturbances and eutrophication episodes that have promoted seagrass habitat loss. Some of the cases presented here show positive results after the implementation of appropriate management measures. Despite the strong developments in the last years for a better management of Portuguese coastal areas a continuous monitoring program and integrated management plans are crucial for the conservation of the coastal habitats and all the goods and services they provide." @default.
