• W2892026095 abstract "The goal of our research was to use low-T thermochronology in south-central Idaho to investigate the relationships between hotspot processes and extension north of the Snake River Plain. We applied (U-Th)/He dating to the Pioneer-Boulder Mountains (PBM) and surrounding granitic bodies to document spatial variations in the timing, amounts and rates of exhumation. The PBMs are an anomalously elevated region not in the footwall of a Basin and Range scale normal fault and presumably record the effects of passage of the hotspot. A 1200 m vertical profile from the Pioneer Core Complex produced ages between 9 and 11 Ma with an exhumation rate between 0.5 and 1 mm/yr. This cooling event is further supported by a sample taken from 12km to the Northwest in the Summit Creek Stock where AHe ages cluster around 7.7Ma. Challis volcanics are preserved at high elevations and neither pluton is bound by a major normal fault. The data shows a rapid pulse of exhumation associated with erosive removal of 2-3 km of material. The Garfield Stock, 20 km SE, is in the footwall of a Copper Creek fault (N-S trending) and yields two average ages between ~9 Ma and ~16 Ma and slope indicative 10 of slow cooling. Preservation of the Challis in the hanging wall and its removal from the footwall shows that our ages directly date motion on fault and is likely a result of B&R extension. Other plutons from the area had older ages by comparison but may have seen Miocene exhumation at deeper levels. Several lines of evidence suggest that the rapid exhumation event recorded in the Pioneers around 10 Ma is related to passage of the hotspot. The high topographic expression along with the removal of the Challis volcanics at a distance parallel to the ESRP suggest uplift and erosive removal due to a flexural bulge possibly aided by a thermal swell. Other ages from the Boulder Mountains and Garfield Stock suggest uplift due to extension along Basin and Range normal faults.
